Nestled within the embrace of Beaufort County’s waterways, the second oldest city in South Carolina‘s culinary scene is as rich as the history behind those well-known antebellum homes.

A quick jaunt around Beaufort‘s streets lined with majestic oaks and Spanish moss, and every sniff and sizzle from the kitchens tells stories of Lowcountry feasts that are about to unfold on your table.

So, pull up a chair, because my two decades of touring around the USA have brought me to some culinary treasures right here in Beaufort, and I’m fixing to share them with you. Let’s tuck in our napkins; it’s time to eat!

Culinary Delights in Beaufort

Saltus River Grill – A Waterside Gastronomic Journey

Maine Lobster Trio dish with lobster tail, lobster cake, and lobster butter
Maine Lobster Trio dish with lobster tail, lobster cake, and lobster butter – saltusrivergrill.com

Perched grandly in historic downtown Beaufort at Waterfront Park and overlooking the Beaufort River, Saltus River Grill is the joint where locals and visitors flock for a taste of the good life.

Here, you’ll find a selection of fresh seafood, sushi, tapas (small plates), and even steaks for the landlubbers in your party.

For me, the crab bisque is the must-get from their extensive menu, and crab cakes are a close second. If you like your seafood raw, though, the sushi is always on point and the oysters on the half shell are briny and succulent! Don’t forget the lowcountry classics like fried green tomatoes for that perfect crunch!

The ambiance? Imagine sophisticated without the stiffness—I’m talking a bustling bar where the clink of glasses harmonizes with laughs and a patio perfect for those balmy Beaufort evenings, complete with a fire pit to set the mood. I highly recommend sitting outside if you can for those beautiful views!

You’ll also find classic cocktails and an extensive wine list to enhance and complete your experience here.

As a more upscale restaurant, you can expect to pay between $30 and $50 on average per entrée here, so by the time you add in drinks plus an appetizer or dessert, you can get towards $100 a person. However, it’s still one of my favorite joints for date night!

Visit Saltus River Grill daily from 5pm to 9pm (10pm on Friday and Saturday nights). There is only dinner service here, but reservations are accepted online if you want to make sure you’ll be able to snag a table.

Old Bull Tavern – Where Tradition Meets Innovation

Margherita Pizza coming out of a wood fire oven
Margherita Pizza coming out of a wood fire oven – oldbulltavern.com

Not far at all from Saltus River Grill sits Old Bull Tavern. This neighborhood gastropub is where tradition meets innovation in a delicious mashup!

You have to try the “green eggs and ham” deviled eggs, with a wasabi kick that ain’t your mama’s deviled eggs! Then, dig into a lamb shank so tender, it falls off the bone just by looking at it, or get fancy with melt in your mouth duck confit. I also can’t say no to sea salt butterscotch pudding for dessert!

Complete your meal with a craft cocktail of the day, a flight of bourbons, or a flight of local draft beer. Yes, there’s wine and imports too, if you’re not feeling like trying something new. The menu does change periodically though, so don’t sleep on something that sounds up your alley!

You can find smaller plates (pastas) and wood fired personal pizzas in the $15 – $20 range, while full entrees are between $25 and $30 on average. There’s also plenty of appetizers and bar snacks around $10 if you just want to come for a beer and some light munching! I usually end up around $50 a person, but it can vary based on how many drinks you have and what you’re hungry for.

Visit Old Bull Tavern Tuesday through Saturday 5pm to 11pm (Midnight on Friday and Saturday nights). They are closed Sundays and Mondays.

Hearth Wood Fired Pizza – The Art of Perfect Pizzas

Wood fired Buffalo Chicken Pizza
Wood fired Buffalo Chicken Pizza – hearthpizzabft.com

Stroll down to Bay Street, and you’ll spot Hearth Wood Fired Pizza doing its thing. It’s a rustic gem where wood-fired pizza isn’t just made; it’s an art form. The centerpiece? A red-domed Marra Forni brick oven – the heart (pun intended) of the place.

My go-to pizza is the ‘Shroomage here, loaded with garlic, mushrooms, onions, and a creamy béchamel that create a symphony of flavor. If you hate mushrooms like my husband, try the classic Margherita instead – it’s the simple done right!

Now, don’t knock it, but the arugula salad here is also stellar, and a great way to balance out all that pizza you’re eating. But, if you’re looking for the most unique option here, then I recommend the wood fired lasagna, the pinnacle of comfort in a cast iron dish.

You’ll also find a nice selection of wines, beers, cocktails, and fancy mocktails for the non-drinks to complete your meal.

Most entrees (both pizzas and pasta) run just under $20. Even with a beer, I usually only spend around $30 per person when I’m here. They have both lunch and dinner service, so you can visit whenever you’re craving cheesy goodness!

Visit Hearth Wood Fired Pizza daily from 11am to 9pm (10pm on Friday and Saturday nights).

Lowcountry Produce Market & Café – Fresh and Homely Choices

Frank's Furter Hot Dog with a side of Onion Rings

Now, when you’re hankering for a taste of the Lowcountry done right, stroll over to Lowcountry Produce Market & Café for breakfast or lunch. It’s serving up Southern charm on a plate, with recipes straight from your Southern granny’s cookbook.

For breakfast, the brioche French toast is sweet, delicious, and the perfect hearty start to your morning. But, anyone who knows me knows that I’m a sucker for a good eggs benedict, and they’re serving it up with all sorts of protein and bread choices. My pro tip? Try the crab cake on the grit cakes for an amazing bite!

At lunchtime, you really can’t go wrong with the classic soup and salad combo, and they always have a rotating selection of fresh soups to try. If you see the She Crab soup available, then I recommend that one for sure, it’s my favorite!

Aside from the café part of this joint, there’s also a store selling pies, pickles, jams, soups, sauces, condiments, coffee, and more, so you can take home some amazing foods for later too.

Feeding myself while also getting some local shopping done – win win! If you’re ever over on Hilton Head Island, there’s a spot there too, serving up the same homely goodness.

Whether it’s breakfast or lunch, most plates fall between $12 and $17 on average, for a delicious meal at a great price. You can also order lunch for pickup for a quick to-go option! Though, there are some tables both indoors and outdoors if you want to sit and enjoy your meal as well.

Visit Lowcountry Produce Market & Cafe daily at the Beaufort location from 8am to 3pm.

Beaufort’s Hidden Gems

Alright, lean in close, because I’m about to give you the skinny on Beaufort’s hidden gems. This city might be a dot on the map, but it’s a treasure trove of spots that’ll make your culinary heart sing without needing to shout about it.

So let’s talk about some of the restaurants that I consider Beaufort South Carolina’s hidden gems!

Lost Local – Bold Flavors in a Cozy Setting

Grilled chicken, bacon, and sriracha ranch tacos
Grilled chicken, bacon, and sriracha ranch tacos – lostlocal.com

Lost Local is one of those places that’s true to its motto: arrive lost and leave a local. Here, you’ll “find” yourself amongst a variety of tasty tacos, fresh seafood, and killer cocktails.

My picks are the fish tacos and the conch fritters because they’re delicious! If you’re not a seafood fan, though, the buffalo chicken tacos are a great option too.

They’ve got an absolutely massive beer list, a full page of wine, and two pages of craft cocktails, one of which is devoted entirely to margaritas (which pair well with tacos, after all)!

You’ll find ample seating around the huge bar, as well as a scattering of high tops and tables for 2-4 people against the wall. My favorite spot are the stools in the window, though, for epic people watching while you eat!

Most items on the menu are under $10, so even with a few tacos and a beer you can easily come in under $50 a person.

Visit Lost Local Wednesday through Saturday from 11am to 9pm, and Sundays 11am to 4pm (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).

Ribaut Social Club – Historical Elegance and Fine Dining

Smoked Salmon Oscar with saffron hollandaise
Smoked Salmon Oscar with saffron hollandaise – anchorage1770.com

At the Ribaut Social Club, it’s about slicing through history with a silver knife and forking up a bit of past splendor at this restaurant that’s been around in various forms in Beaufort since 1891!

You’ll find it tucked away in the historical Anchorage 1770, a boutique inn with more stories than an old library, this spot serves elegance on a platter. The good news is you don’t need to be a hotel guest to dine here as of their latest launch (in 2017)!

Add the ambiance of the grand porch where the breeze flirts with the drapes, or the view from the roof (you can’t dine there, but it’s worth checking out while you’re there), and dining here feels less like eating and more like partaking in a slice of Beaufort high society.

Sunday brunch is what Ribaut is probably most known for, but if you’re not a morning person (neither am I), then the dinner service is delicious in its own right. The steaks are popular, and for good reason! If you do make it for brunch, though, I love the French toast and the benedict.

Note that the menu regularly rotates based on seasonal ingredient availability, so you may find something new each time you visit!

As more of an upscale restaurant, prices reflect that – entrees for dinner run between $40 and $60 on average. Factor in a drink, and perhaps a starter or dessert, and you’ll be up towards $100 a person, but it’s still a nice treat for date night, especially with the cozy charm!

Visit Ribaut Social Club Wednesday through Saturday from 5pm to 7pm for dinner, and Sunday 10:30am to 2pm for Brunch. Note that you must have a reservation if you are not a hotel guest. Seating on the porches is limited by weather, so keep an eye on the forecast if that’s your desired spot!

Madison’s – A Fusion of Local Ingredients and Classic Cooking

Shrimp and Grits with tasso ham, mushrooms, and tomatoes

Wander a bit off the beaten path, and you’ll find Madison’s, where the local ingredients take center stage in a showcase of classic cooking. Now, technically you’ll find this restaurant in Port Royal, but seeing as it’s less than 10 minutes from Beaufort, I think it’s a worthwhile addition!

Here, you’ll find a selection of succulent seafood, along with burgers, sandwiches, and more classic fare. The She Crab soup always hits the spot, but the fried grit cakes with seafood gravy is my favorite. Sometimes, I like to change it up with the Mahi Mahi sandwich, though.

You’ll find other lowcountry classics like fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese, oysters on the half shell, and deviled eggs too. There are craft cocktails to explore as well, and don’t forget the bourbon pecan pie for dessert – one of my favorites!

Most items on the lunch menu run about $15 – $20, while dinner entrees average between $25 and $30. They’re equally delicious, so if you’re on a tighter budget but still want to go, consider a lunch date!

Visit Madison’s Tuesday through Saturdays from 11am to 9pm (closed Sundays and Mondays). Reservations are highly recommended, especially for dinner service, so make sure to phone ahead if you want to get in for sure.

Fishcamp on 11th Street – Scenic Views and Seafood Specialties

Fried Lobster Tail with corn coulis

Sitting by the Beaufort River in nearby Port Royal, you’ll find shrimp boats bobbing in the distance and Fishcamp on 11th Street dishing out a culinary escapade as scenic as they come.

Part of Hilton Head Island’s CRAB restaurant group, this spot is no stranger to plating up the freshest of the ocean’s bounty, with seafood specialties that’ll have you setting your anchors here for the long haul. Plus, the views here (especially at sunset) will give the food a run for the money on why you stop in.

The crab stuffed flounder is my go-to dish here, but there are other great options like seafood pasta, fish tacos, blue crab cakes, creamy lobster bisque, and fresh oysters on the half shell. In short, you can’t go wrong here if you’re a seafood lover (but vegetarian options are available).

Brunch on Sunday (from 10am to 2pm) is also an option, or you can hit up happy hour daily from 4-6pm for deals on beer, wine, and light bites at the bar. I love their cocktails too – they’re not usually part of the specials, but still worth sitting at the bar when you just want a tasty beverage!

Most lunch options fall between $15 and $20 a plate, with dinner entrees (4-10pm) being around $25 – $40 on average (with some limited exceptions in both cases).

You can visit Fishcamp on 11th Street daily from 11am to 10pm.

Lady’s Island Dockside – Serenity and Seafood By the Dock

Now, let me bend your ear about Lady’s Island Dockside, a tranquil little nook so close to the fishing spots, that you could practically reel in your dinner (but don’t worry, no fishing is actually required to enjoy your meal)!

Perched on the water’s edge, this haven cooks up the ocean’s treasures just right! I always have to get the She Crab soup, but my entrée of choice is the Dockside Dinner. It’s a medley of lobster, scallops, crab legs, and shrimp, along with corn and potatoes for an amazing (and delicious) meal.

For your landlubbers, there’s a mean ribeye on the menu too. Finish things off with dessert (try the bourbon pecan pie), or something from the extensive list of wines, beers, and craft cocktails. There are even frozen cocktails for the heat of the summer – the Dockside Gator is my favorite!

Entrees range from $22 to $40 on average, and a kids menu is available if you’re bringing the family. You can also order online in advance for takeout, and dine at home if you prefer!

Visit Dockside daily from 4pm to 10pm (dinner service only). You can dine indoors or on the screen in porch, offering views of Factory Creek, Woods Memorial Bridge, and downtown Beaufort.

Breakwater Restaurant & Bar – Contemporary Eats in a Relaxed Atmosphere

Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Southern gravy

Step into Breakwater Restaurant & Bar, and you’ll feel that Beaufort charm wrap around you like a cozy blanket. This spot’s a “field to fork” establishment that’s a long-time sweetheart of the locals, flaunting a menu chock-full of Carolinas Southern comfort food and coastal seafood that’ll tickle your taste buds right.

The Southern fried chicken with creamy white gravy always hits the spot for me. But, there’s also a NY strip and a mean pork chop if that’s more your speed. There’s usually a fresh catch of the day if you’re craving seafood, but I always come here for the hearty Southern style dishes because they’re just done right.

Finish your meal with a local craft beer, a robust wine list, or a carefully curated cocktail. If you love a good sour like me, check out the Carteret Sour cocktail!

Entrees range from $20 to $45, so there’s a wide range to suit various budgets and tastes. You can also hit up happy hour from 5-7pm on weekdays for specials on well drinks and wines (but no food deals, at least when I’ve been).

Visit Breakwater Restaurant and Bar Monday through Saturday from 5pm to 9pm (10pm on Friday and Saturday nights). They are closed on Sundays. Takeout is available up to an hour before close. Since there is dinner service only, reservations are highly recommended, but you can make them online!

Casual Eats and Gathering Spots

Whether you’re after a quick bite or a place to chill with pals over a cold one, Beaufort’s got your number. The casual spots here are where the food’s always good, the prices don’t make your wallet cry, and the vibe’s as friendly as a tail-wagging puppy.

So, pull up a chair, order a plate of something delicious, and soak up the local scene. It’s dining without the fuss, and it’s downright magnificent at some of the best casual dining spots in Beaufort South Carolina.

Bricks on Boundary – Casual Bites in a Vibrant Atmosphere

Bricks' Famous Fried Shrimp with a side of fries

Nestled right in the heart of Beaufort, you’ll find Bricks on Boundary. It’s one of those restaurants that pulls you in with its charm and keeps you there with its downright delectable bar & grill offerings.

Here, you’ll find classic pub food, a stocked bar, and big screen TVs to catch your favorites. You could also stop by for trivia nights or some live music if you’re into a more lively scene!

The fried shrimp are my favorite thing on the menu, served with a side of creamy mac and cheese. If you’re feeling more comfort food, though, the meatloaf sandwich is always a delicious choice as well. There’s also a lot of other fried favorites, burgers, and even salads to explore, though!

For dessert, don’t skip out on the “hot fudge brownie mess in a mason jar.” Yeah, I’m not making that one up, that’s really the name. But don’t let it fool you – it’s chocolatey bliss!

Entrees and sandwiches are between $15 and $20 on average, so you can enjoy a casual night out without breaking the bank!

Visit Bricks on Boundary daily from 11am to 9pm (10pm on Friday and Saturday nights). Oh, and the patio is dog-friendly as well, so feel free to bring Fido for drinks or dinner.

The Fillin’ Station – Beaufort’s Friendly Neighborhood Eatery

Softshell Crab Sandwich served over Cheese Grits
Softshell Crab Sandwich served over Cheese Grits – The Fillin Station on Facebook.com

Alright, here’s the scoop on The Fillin’ Station, a spot that oozes neighborly charm from its pores. Sit down here, and relax while gazing out over the local marshes and marina, listening to the sounds of all coastal living’s charms.

The unpretentious dive bar food is no fuss, and served in baskets or paper trays for a lot of fare. However, there are specials for dinner, like fried pork chops and all the fixins served on a plate I swear came from my grandmother’s china cabinet – and that’s only $10, including a beer!

You’ll feel like family with down home cooked meals, and on many nights you can be treated to live bands too! Note that they don’t take reservations, except for special occasion brunch events, so it’s first come first serve on the rest of the seats and specials in the house!

Enjoy a bottled beer, craft beer, cider, or mixed drink with your meal (they do have some wine, but if you want to go somewhere solely for the wine, I promise you this isn’t it).

Most normal menu items are between $10 and $20, but there are always daily specials to sweeten the deal.

Visit The Fillin’ Station Monday through Saturday from 11am to 11pm (Midnight on Friday and Saturday nights). Sundays are 10:30am to 8pm, and the only day you can grab brunch there.

Nearby Cities – A Taste Beyond Beaufort

While Beaufort’s definitely got plenty of amazing options when it comes to good food, there’s always room to broaden your horizons. Nearby cities are just a hop, skip, and a jump outside of town, and give you access to a whole new array of flavors.

So, if you’ve been around the area a while and want to branch out to something new, take a jaunt to some nearby cities:

  • Port Royal. Port Royal is only about 10 minutes by car from Beaufort, so it’s incredibly close and convenient. In fact, I already included a couple Port Royal joints in my list of the best Beaufort restaurants! There’s always more great establishments to explore here, though, and you don’t need to travel far
  • Hilton Head. About an hour south of Beaufort, you can spend a day in Hilton Head. It’s a high tourist area for sure, but there’s still a lot of good and innovative food options to explore! Check out my list of restaurants in Hilton Head South Carolina for some inspiration, and make a day of it with more things to do at Hilton Head Island South Carolina!
